Fairy Gardening – Create YOUR own fairy garden!

Fairy Pond

Fairy Pond is a wonderful accent to add to your fairy garden or display outside a fairy home.

Creating a fairy garden is not rocket science, but it does involve some research and planning in order to achieve the desired results.  FAIRY GARDENING, Creating Your Own Magical Miniature Garden, written by Julie Bawden-Davis and Beverly Turner, and GARDENING in MINIATURE, Create Your Own Tiny Living World, by Janit Calvo are great reference books available here at eFairies.com.  They’re full of helpful hints on how to select, plant, and stage a relaxing, beautiful setting where fairies can follow their passion, or simply hang out.

According to Bawden-Davis and Turner, you need to follow a few simple steps when designing and planting a fairy garden.   These include choosing the perfect container, selecting a theme, creating a focal point, planting perfect pint-sized plants, and decorating with appropriately scaled accessories.  Following these steps will help create an intriguing visual story for your new magical world.

Suspension Bridge

Suspension Bridge is just what every fairy garden needs to help the fairies and gnomes cross those difficult paths whether it be a stream of water, or a ditch.

Of course, adorable fairy figures and accessories make the garden an open invitation for all fairies to come join the fun.  eFairies has hundreds of miniature accessories to add personality to your garden.  We carry landscaping materials, pixie sized plants and potsanimal figurines, bird bathswishing wellstables and chairs, and just about anything else needed to accent the very best fairy gardens.  These fixtures and figurines also come in a variety of sizes to fit the proportions of your design, an important aspect of creating a well-balanced garden.

Fairy gardens can differ greatly, but all are steeped in an aura of enchantment and magic.  For their diminutive size, fairy gardens can have a wonderfully dramatic impact at minimal cost, are space savers, and require marginal maintenance.  But most importantly, fairy gardens offer a hobby that can be shared with children, grand children, or with your own inner child.

Holiday Fairy Houses

Fairy Wishing Well

People have gone gaga over fairy houses and gardens.  No wonder. Fairy houses are adorable, easy to manage, and amazingly creative.  And miniature fairy cottages, cabins, or castles can now be accessorized with just aboutanything including outhouses, wishing wells, enamelware pots and pans, rubber boots, and even tiny garden gnomes.Miniature Fairy Out House

Here at eFairies, we’re always at the cutting edge of all things fairy.  Is it any wonder that we’ve taken the fairy house to a new level, winterizing it and decking its halls for the holidays?  We’ve turned the fairy domain into a place that would look right at home on Candy Cane Lane.

Dressing up a holiday fairy cottage or dollhouse is easy and only takes a few key pieces of decor.  A Mini String of Flashing Christmas Lights around the eaves, door, or windows of the home adds a touch of festive twinkle.  Position a Peppermint Fence or White Snow Village Fence in the Peppermint Lit Bare Branch Treefront yard, with a landscaping of Winter Berry Trees or the Peppermint Lit Bare Branch Trees “planted” nearby.  This will give the fairy abode a North Pole flare.

Oh course you’ll need a Peppermint Bench or two for weary fairies and elves to rest upon and catch their breath during the hectic holidays.  Also, a Village Wooden Log Pile is a necessary addition if your fairy residents want warm, cozy yuletide fires. And for those short winter days, Uptown Street Lights  are a must-have to keep the neighborhood cheery and safe.

The area around the fairy house can also be decorated with evergreen boughs, holly, pinecones, etc.  A facsimile of snow is always a nice touch, and really sets off the winter wonderland tone.Uptown Street Lights, Set of 2

So forget baking that messy Gingerbread House, or the dangerous task of hanging holiday lights on your eaves.  Instead, start a safe and crumb-free tradition of Christmasizing a fairy home.  You will soon have a fan base of fairies clamoring for more candy cane décor!!!

Fairy Garden Tips From the Fairy Godmother PT 3.

I’m anxious to hear how your Fairy Garden, Fairy Home, or Fairy Kingdom has progressed since we last visited!

While on a trip to Georgia and Florida I had fun experimenting with natural materials not found in the Northwest.  On each of my walks I kept noticing the material under the Palm trees and I just had to carry some home and play around with it. I made some homes that resembled tee-pees.  I knew I wouldn’t be there to care for them for long but I that didn’t stop me. I positioned them around trees that had little openings at the base of the trunk so that it looked like an open doorway.  Then I decorated with Spanish Moss and fresh Azalia blooms.  Oh how pretty!  I do wonder if any humans noticed.  I am certain that the fairies were amused to see the Fairy Godmother happily building and playing along the paths!

Another item that I don’t have in our woods, that are available to those who live by the ocean, are the many different shells!  I know that you can use them for constructing homes, but they also make very attractive paths and steps to reach your homes.  I usually use nuts or stones, but the shells can shimmer when sun shines on them to give a magical touch to the scene!

Live miniature plants and bushes give a special feel to your kingdom!  You can also check out miniature artificial plants to add just the right seasonal color that you are looking for to highlight or accent.

A special feature that you may want to incorporate into your setting is lighting.  The magic of some little flickering lights will add charm that will attract attention of humans and the fairies.  Perhaps a solar light would work for you if you have enough daytime sun to recharge for the nighttime.

Many items can be purchased for whatever scene you want to create!  Firepits, chairs, tables, bricks, or fences.  Birds, fairies, flowers, pillows or trikes.  We are forever adding new items to keep your imagination and creativity flowing.

Enjoy every sparkling wonderful day!

Love,

The Fairy Godmother

Better Fairy Homes and Gardens

Did you know little is the new big?  In the growing miniature market, tiny is trés chic.  After years of ostentatious consumption, with homes that looked and felt more like warehouses, it’s good that we’re back to appreciating things of a smaller scale.  That includes gardens.

The Fairy Garden is the smallest of the small.  It is tranquil – much like a Zen garden – but the main aesthetic is its miniature proportions.  Fairy Homes and dwellings nestled in fairy gardens are small, dollhouse size or less structures, that are built of stone or materials of an organic nature.  The cottage designs are timeless, and seamlessly mesh with the landscape.  eFairies.com has some great examples of fairy dwellings with their line of Little White Barn products. Carling’s Cottage, Blossom’s Bungalow, and Aidan’s Cottage are all the perfect size to accommodate a family of fairies

Outfitting these cottages and barns is easy with Fairy Garden Accessories.  House exteriors can be dressed up with wishing wells, arbors, vine fences, ladders, leaf garden stakes, tiny gazing balls, and leaf bistro sets. Inside the abode, dollhouse furniture or accessories in the form of fairy canopy beds or tea time table and chairs can turn a shell of a house into a “home sweet home.”

When hardscaping the actual garden surrounding the miniature dwellings, be creative with leaf stepping stones, fairy garden brick sets, aged pathway tiles, aged garden fountain, cobblestone paths, and garden walls.   It will really give that teeny tiny yard a lived in feel.

Landscape the Fairy Garden patch with colorful flowers such as Primroses, Pansies, or Alyssum; ground covers such as Irish Moss, Blue Star Creeper, or Creeping Jenny; and with dwarf shrubs of Rosemary and Lavender.   Remember – go heavy on the perennials and dwarf shrubs, light on the annuals.

The perfect Fairy Homes and Gardens are sure to attract sprites from far and wide, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies.  Keep the area clean and comfortable, and you’ll have fairy lodgers for years to come.

The Beauty of the Barn – Little White Barn CO.

It has been an interesting

journey for Adam New of Menton, Ohio.  He and his wife Julie started their home-based business in “a little white barn,” not much bigger than a studio, in their backyard.  They built landscape carpentry items such as arbors and pergolas.  Their advertising overhead consisted of a sign in their front yard.  Through

word of mouth, their business of custom built wooden garden structures grew and prospered…until the downturn in the housing market.

The News decided to reinvent their Little White Barn business.  They first started making small troughs and stone items for landscapes, and developed them into little houses.  It didn’t happen overnight.  It took three years to develop the special stone formula used in creating the cottage and barn walls, designed to withstand the harshest winter weather.

Aidan’s Cottage, Lilly’s Landing Fairy House , Carling’s Cottage Fairy House, and Brenna’s Barn Fairy House are a few of the fabulous fairy homes Adam and Julie continue to build. These tiny structures are transformed into pieces of art by hand tooling, then accessorized with hand-forged wrought iron hardware, fairy doors, and tin roofs.  The roofs are removable, making them perfect places for fairies and their furnishings like Tea Time Armchairs, Tea Time Table and Chairs, and Miniature Fairy Garden Tool Sets.

When this homegrown company added these miniature stone buildings to their repertoire, Little White Barn caught the fancy of gardeners throughout the United States.  Avid collectors include the fairy gardener, a rapidly expanding part of the landscaping market; the miniature gardener, who always wants everything on a much smaller scale; and the urban gardener.

Thanks to hard work, and belief in your product, Little White Barn has weathered the recession, and even a tornado that destroyed the company’s namesake.  This unassuming, unpretentious business has grown from its humble beginnings into a store and workshop in the heart of Mentor, with a name that is recognized for quality, and a reputation that is built one satisfied customer at a time.
